All About Opals

All About Opals

The month of October brings many different things: crisp autumn air, Halloween, chunky sweaters, boots and opals. October doesn't have one stone, but two. Tourmaline is often seen as the gemstone for October, however, there is one that is cherished above the rest. Opals, which are possibly the moodiest, most unique stone, first come to mind when thinking of each month's birthstone.

Opal is truly special because of its one-of-a-kind color combination. They are delicate don't have any crystal structure. Opals can come in hues such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink and even black!

The name opal is thought to be derived from the Sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone, and later the Greek derivative Opallios, meaning to see a change of color. Throughout history, opals have believed to have a whimsical property to them. Opals have been a symbol of fidelity and assurance and later on, were associated with religious emotional prayer. Today, opals are still so cherished and will be for years to come.
